2018 Law Day

For the fourth year in a row students from 13 Detroit high schools have accepted Chief Judge Robert J. Colombo’s personal invitation to participate in a Law Day program co-hosted by the Third Circuit Court and the Detroit Bar Association.

WHO: For the fourth year in a row students from 13 Detroit high schools have accepted Chief Judge Robert J. Colombo’s personal invitation to participate in a Law Day program co-hosted by the Third Circuit Court and the Detroit Bar Association. The program will start at 10:00 a.m. in the 13th Floor Auditorium of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. Motivational Speaker Jonathan Edison will address the students with an inspirational story about how he was able to succeed growing up in Detroit, overcoming very difficult obstacles. After Mr. Edison’s presentation, each school will go to a courtroom in the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center to participate in oral arguments on the right to free speech under the First Amendment within the context of a bullying situation in a high school. After argument, the students will have lunch with the attorneys who trained them for the argument and the judge in the courtroom. The program ends at 1:30 p.m.
 
WHAT: This is an effort by the Detroit Bar Association (DBA) and particularly the Barristers, the young lawyers section of the DBA, and the Court to educate students on the law and job opportunities in the legal field.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
 
WHY: This program was established to celebrate Law Day which was first established by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1958 to mark the nation’s commitment to the rule of law. Law Day is an opportunity to strengthen our American heritage of liberty, justice, and quality under the law. Law Day programs are designed to provide a deeper understanding of our justice system, encouragement of young people interested in pursuing a career in law.
