Law
Day, May 12, 2016
The Third Circuit
Court and the Detroit Metropolitan Bar
Association sponsored Law Day at the Court
on Thursday, May 12, 2016. Close to
300 high school students from Detroit were
able to hear an educational speech on the
operation of the Prosecutor's Office, the
investigation of police shooting cases, and
the solicitation of funds for rape kit
testing by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym
Worthy. The students were then taken
to 13 courtrooms in the Coleman A. Young
Municipal Center where judges presided over
mock appellant arguments relating to
whether a school violated First Amendment
rights by suspending students who wore
"Black Lives Matter" t-shirts and refused
to stand for the national anthem in
response to a police shooting case that
resulted in no charges. The judges
lectured and answered questions about the
work done at the court and any related
issues.

JUVENILE MENTAL HEALTH
COURT
The Third Circuit Court's Juvenile
Mental Health Court (JMHC) started on
January 1, 2016. Much has been
accomplished in a short time.
JMHC started with the Incorrigibility
Docket, and as of April 1, 2016, began
taking referrals from other jurists
within the Court. JMHC has nine
youth actively participating in JMHC,
and eight youth who are in various
stages of entering the program.
JMHC is rapidly expanding, and is
projected to enroll 20 youth by the end
of June.
On May 9, 2016, the Presiding Judge of
JMHC was invited to be the keynote
speaker for the Family Alliance for
Change Breakfast, "Collaboration for a
Better Future" at University of
Michigan's Dearborn Campus.
Organizations from the Metro area and
the State of Michigan, who work with
children and families with mental
health concerns, were in
attendance. Judge Joseph
presented the JMHC program and
explained the goals and treatment
methods used. His speech was well
received and several of the
organizations who attended have
followed up with emails and phone calls
offering support and services for our
youth.
On
May 23, 2016, JMHC will host our
Community Partners meeting at Lincoln
Hall, and will provide an update of the
program. The community has been
very supportive of this program.
The JMHC Judge and team are committed to
making this a program that truly benefits
the participants as they assist them on
their journey to maintain positive mental
health

On April 28th 2016, Friend of the Court
employees participated in Bring Your
Child to Work Day.
Twenty-seven children, along with their
parents from the Family Division of the
Third Circuit Court, participated in
this nationwide event.
Chief Judge Robert J. Colombo Jr.
kicked off the day with a warm welcome
for each child taking part in the
festivities. The children's day
was packed with numerous activities
including an Easter Egg Hunt
"icebreaker," a "Scavenger Hunt," a
challenging game of "Jeopardy," the
spooky "Mummy Game," and a crowd
favorite - the "Dress Up Game."
Legal Director Erin Lincoln, Senior
Referee Stephanie Witucki, and Wayne
County Sheriff Lt. Timothy Harris spoke
to the kids about what their parents do
at the Friend of the Court. The
Information Services Department put on
their own scavenger hunt experience for
the children by decorating their
cubicles and offices using such themes
as travel agency, movies,
and dance.
In the afternoon, Senior Referee
Stephanie Witucki presented the
children with certificates for their
involvement in 2016 Bring Your Child to
Work Day. After snacks, the kids
had the chance to role play in a mock
trial entitled "Right to Recess" in
which the jury found in favor of the
plaintiff (the students) and the
right to a daily recess.
Hooray!
Bring Your Child to Work Day will take
place Thursday, April 27, 2017 so -
BRING YOUR CHILD TO WORK!
