A COURT THAT CARES
Chief Judge Colombo would like to recognize and thank the Clinic For Child Study staff for going the extra mile. The Clinic for Child Study hosted a Back to School event. The Clinic staff donated uniforms, book bags, and school supplies for over 100 students and served grilled burgers, sausages, and hot dogs to all attendees. Clinical Assessment Specialist III, Team Leader Cheryl McGill-McNeary coordinated the event. Chief Judge Colombo and other Court staff contributed. Clinic Director Michelle Milligan and her staff truly care about the well-being of children and families.

Greetings,
Summer is winding down and in the next few weeks Wayne County children will head off to Head Start program, Detroit Public Schools, Education Achievement Authority Schools, and various charter schools. The Third Circuit Court is also committed to ensuring the well-being of Wayne County children and families. Within the Family Division of the Third Circuit Court, there are 16 Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judges. They hear custody, parenting time, delinquency, truancy, and neglect matters. And behind those judges, are the dedicated staff who serve in the courtrooms, in the schools, and at the front counters to ensure the job gets done. The Family Division-Juvenile kicked off the school year with a Back to School Bash, and the Family Division-Domestic will follow up with its Friend of the Court Child Support Outreach at the Detroit Public Library in the fall. With its many partners like the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Court is looking forward to the start of the school year.

The Friends of Wayne County CASA is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that supports the Wayne County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Program and the at-risk children the program serves. The Friends support the CASA Program in many ways including the following recent activities:
Back to School Backpacks - With Quicken Loans' donation of 100 backpacks filled with school supplies, school-aged children in the CASA program will be ready to return to school this fall.
CASA Clothes Closet - Located at Lincoln Hall of Justice, the closet has free clothes for children and families who are involved in court matters. Clothing donations to the closet are now eligible for tax deductions. Roland Smith, the Director of the CASA Program, may be contacted at
roland.smith@3rdcc.org
to make donations.
Financial Donations - Gifts from donors are accepted to support the CASA Program to support the children and families of Wayne County. The most recent donors include the Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity and Staffing Solutions. Those interested in donating may contact Friends of CASA Chairperson, Elena Kerasiotis at
ekeras@aol.com
.
On July 29, 2015, Presiding Judge Virgil Smith swore in eight new volunteers to the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Program. CASA volunteers are specially trained community volunteers to advocate for the "best interests of the children" on the Neglect and Abuse Docket in the Juvenile Division. CASA volunteers are appointed by the judges and referees to gather fact-based information and share with the Court the child's perspective. Each volunteer participates in an extensive background check and must complete a 40 hour training session, including courtroom observation. For more information for those that wish to volunteer, contact Roland Smith at the CASA Office at (313) 833-3093, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
