Criminal Division Sponsors Mock Trial

On Thursday, May 28, 2015 students from Cornerstone Charter Schools' Washington-Parks Academy (WPA) descended on Frank Murphy Hall of Justice.

Students from WPA's sixth, seventh, and eighth grades conducted a mock trial surrounding the ever growing topic of bullying. Students were mentored by the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) from WMU-Cooley Law School. In preparation for this trial, students were selected to represent the various roles in the courtroom, such as lawyers, defendant, and witnesses.

This experiment gave the students an opportunity to deal with a subject matter to which some or many may have dealt with firsthand or know someone who has. It was definitely a good life lesson.

Thanks to Judge Michael Riordan from the Court of Appeals, Erin McNeil from Cornerstone, and the BLSA for their involvement in this project.

And thank you to the students of WPA. Job well done.

Spell It Out

Several Pretrial Services staff were recently sponsored to participate in the Spell Bowl at the Southfield Public Library on April 22, 2015.  An image of Pretrial Services Specialist Leigh Ann Spaman was captured in the Southfield Sun Newspaper (See above).  Pretrial Services had two teams of Pretrial Services Specialists participate including:

Arc of Justice #1:  Ebonie Byndon-Fields, Cora Durham (Team Captain) & Leigh Ann Spaman

Arc of Justice #2:  Larry MacDonald, Nicole Parsons & Marie Quaker (Team Captain)

Pretrial Services Specialist Gilbert Roland attended the event to support his coworkers.

All team registration fees went to support the Southfield Veterans Commission.

Jury of Our Peers

We appreciate all jurors who answer the call to serve.

Jury service is to protect the rights of a defendant in a criminal case.  At the jury office at Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, our objective is to provide an adequate number of jurors to our courtrooms with scheduled jury trials. We are proud to say that we are almost always able to meet that goal. Our main focus is to ensure that our jurors are treated in a respectable manner so that they leave our courthouse with a positive outlook, knowing that their time and service were put to good use. We always strive to do all that we can to make our jurors feel welcomed and appreciated. Most people do not realize that serving on jury duty is not only their civic duty, but also an honor and a privilege.

We have made several changes and improvements for the benefit of both our jurors, as well as our workers. One major improvement we made was getting new computers and getting a new software program. Along with this new software program came several user-friendly changes; including a new one-step juror questionnaire/summons which saves both money and time for the Court; a new website that allows jurors to complete their questionnaires online and gives them the option to communicate with the jury staff via email and upload any supplemental documentation directly on the computer.

Another major improvement was the updating of our jury assembly room. This update included painting of walls, adding wall décor, and adding new/additional chairs and tables to comfortably accommodate our jurors.

All of these changes have had a positive effect on our jury office staff, the court system, and on our jurors.

Greetings,

The month of June brings more community engagement activities and we welcome you to join us and learn more about our commitment to serve the residents of Wayne County.
