 WE ARE IN THE NEWS...

On Friday, October 24, 2014  , Chief Judge Robert J. Colombo, Jr. announced from the bench to a full courtroom why the Third Judicial Circuit Court issued show cause orders for noncompliant jurors to appear before the Court.

Failure to answer and return the Jury Service Questionnaire and failure to appear when summoned as a juror without being excused are punishable acts of contempt.

WDIV interviewed Judge Colombo and supported the courts efforts to educate jurors.   Click here to view the interview.

Over 125 jurors appeared on October 30th and were given an opportunity to agree to a future date of service or to explain to Judge Colombo why they should not have to serve.

The Court will continue to raise public awareness on the importance of jury service through outreach and future enforcement hearings.

Chief Judge
Robert J. Colombo, Jr.

November is National

Adoption Month

President Obama's proclaimed,
"Over the past decade, more than 500,000 children have been adopted.  However, there are still too many children waiting to be part of an adoptive family.  This month -- on the Saturday before Thanksgiving -- we will observe the 15th annual National Adoption Day, a nationwide celebration that brings together policymakers, practitioners, and advocates to finalize thousands of adoptions and to raise awareness of those still in need of permanent homes."

The Third Judicial Circuit Court in observance of National Adoption Month held community forums at faith based organizations to promote awareness of foster parenting and adoption. For more information on becoming a foster or adoptive parent, please call Michigan Children's Law Center at (734) 281-1900.

Did We Miss You?

There wasn't much media to publicize the event so you may have missed it.

On Saturday, October 25th private practice attorneys, Legal Aid and Defender Association attorneys, and the Salvation Army's William Booth Legal Aid Clinic attorneys helped over 150 people with Wayne County Friend of the Court child support issues.  The Detroit Public Library's main branch hosted the event, and the attorneys volunteered helping parties complete various motion packets.  How to resolve bench warrants, how to enforce support, and how to reduce child support arrearages were burning questions.   After individual consultations with the volunteer attorneys, most attendees left smiling and relieved; they received needed information and direction.

In case you missed this event, there will be another event in April

2015.   The event details will be published in January 2015.  Check

out the Court's website at www.3rdcc.org and the Library's website at www, detroitpubliclibrary.org for  events and news.

We hope to see you then!
