The Court's Diversity & Inclusion Team strives to ensure the values of its diverse bench, staff, and court users are acknowledged and reflected in our delivery of service as well as our work environment.

In that spirit, the team creates and shares a monthly list of various holidays and observations along with some celebration suggestions.  As we are practicing social distancing, we invite our work community and the community at large to support division and inclusion virtually.

Cinco de Mayo - May 5th
Memorial Day - May 25th

Ramadan is a Muslim holiday observed by 1.8 billion people in the world; that is 24% of the world's population. Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.  The five pillars of Islam are faith, prayer, charity, self-purification (fasting), and the pilgrimage to Mecca. This year it began April 23 and ends May 23.

Jewish American Heritage Month was established in 2006 and recognizes the 350-year history of Jewish contributions to America and the American culture.
    • Albert Einstein, Science
    • Sigmund Schlomo Freud, Psychoanalysis
    • Sanford "Sandy" Koufax, Baseball
    • J. Robert Oppenheimer and Edward Teller, Nuclear Physics

Asian Pacific Heritage Month is May because that month marked the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in America in 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad.  The coast-to-coast railroad connection revolutionized the settlement and economy of the American West.

Cinco de Mayo is not the celebration of Mexican Independence.  Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.  The celebration is more popular in the United States than Mexico.  September 16th commemorates Mexico's Independence.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May.  This holiday commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States.  "May we never forget that freedom is not free."- Unknown
