The Third Circuit Court Diversity and Inclusion Team's Mission: "We appreciate our common connection and respect our diverse and unique human experiences. We move forward as an inclusive organization as we provide accessible and equal justice."
 
The Court's Diversity & Inclusion Team strives to ensure the values of its diverse bench, staff, and court users are acknowledged and reflected in our delivery of service as well as our work environment.
 
In that spirit, the team creates and shares a monthly list of various holidays and observations along with some celebration suggestions.  We invite our work community and the community at large to contribute.

The month of January is named after the Roman god of doors, Janus, because this month is the door into the New Year.  Janus is also called the two-faced god.  He represents all beginnings and possesses the ability to see the past and the future.


National Blood Donor Month - January 1 - National Blood Donor Month, which has taken place each January since 1970, is such an important observance.  Donating blood saves many lives and improves the health for many people. 
 


Cervical Health Awareness Month - The United States Congress designated January as Cervical Health Awareness Month.  More than 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer each year, but the disease is preventable with vaccination and appropriate screening.
 
During January, NCCC and its many local chapters across the country highlight issues related to cervical cancer, HPV disease, and the importance of early detection.  While NCCC chapters host events throughout the year, January is a month with a special focus as chapters celebrate Cervical Health Awareness Month and work to spread the word in their communities.


  

National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month - On December 31, 2012, Barack Obama declared January the National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.  In his proclamation, President Obama explains that "trafficking networks operate both domestically and trans-nationally, and although abuses disproportionately affect women and girls, the victims of this ongoing global tragedy are men, women, and children of all ages.  Around the world, we are monitoring the progress of governments in combating trafficking while supporting programs aimed at its eradication."  On December 29, 2017, President Donald Trump proclaimed January 2018 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.
