The Third Circuit Court Diversity and Inclusion Team’s Mission: "We appreciate our common connection and respect our diverse and unique human experiences. We move forward as an inclusive organization as we provide accessible and equal justice."


The Court’s Diversity & Inclusion Team strives to ensure the values of its diverse bench, staff, and court users are acknowledged and reflected in our delivery of service as well as our work environment.


In that spirit, the team creates and shares a monthly list of various holidays and observations along with some celebration suggestions. We invite our work community and the community at large to contribute.

Rosa Parks Day – December 1 – Rosa Parks Day promotes equal opportunities, civil rights, and fairness across communities in the U.S. Church leaders, politicians, and organizational leaders unite in states like California and Ohio to promote the day with a range of events and activities.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery – December 2 – The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is annually held on December 2 to raise awareness of the atrocities of modern slavery.

World Soil Day – December 5 – Recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences in 2002, World Soil Day focuses on the importance of healthy soil and advocates sustainable management.

National Handwashing Awareness Week – December 5 – December 11 – Following the COVID-19 pandemic and as we move into cold and flu season, this awareness week reminds us of the importance of washing our hands as a means to prevent sickness.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day – December 7 – National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which is annually on December 7, commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, during World War II. Many American service men and women lost their lives or were injured on December 7, 1941.

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is also referred to as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day or Pearl Harbor Day.

Human Rights Day – December 10 – established by the United Nations in 1948 to commemorate the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – Human Rights Day | United Nations.

Hanukkah – December 18 to 26 – commemorates the Jewish Maccabees victory over Syrian Greeks and the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 139 BCE, restoring Jewish independence. The nine candles on the menorah remember the oil lamps miraculously burning for the eight days of the celebration.

Wright Brothers Day – December 17 – Wright Brothers Day is celebrated in the United States on December 17 each year. The date commemorates the Wright Brothers' first successful flight in heavier-than-air, mechanically propelled craft, accomplished on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Kwanzaa – December 26 –January 1 – Kwanzaa is a week-long holiday honoring African culture and traditions. It falls between December 26 and January 1 each year. Maulana Karenga, an African-American leader, proposed this observance and it was first celebrated between December 1966 and January 1967.
