Ms. Andrews has been employed with the Court for 3 1/2 years.

November's Quote of the Month Winner.
CONGRATULATIONS

Friend of the Court Attorney and Supervisor Ms. Kathryn Mayer was honored with the 2016 Prosecuting Attorney Supervisor Award at the Michigan Family Support Council's Fall Conference on October 6, 2016.  This award is given to an attorney who works in the Prosecutor's Office, establishing child support and paternity cases, and who is credited with performing exemplary service within the Michigan Child Support Program.

Ms. Mayer was nominated by her supervisor, Ms. Erin Lincoln, Legal Director-Assistant Friend of the Court for Wayne County, who describes Ms. Mayer as being "passionate about establishing paternity and family support cases with a passion that is evident in her everyday work.  Ms. Mayer coordinates not only the legal side of Case Establishment, but the Administrative and Referee Division as well.  So well, in fact, that we often take it for granted."

Congratulations to Ms. Mayer on this well-deserved award.

Referee Leslie Graves was selected as the 2016 recipient of the Kristy Lynn Berkelbaugh Child Advocate Award.

Referee Graves' commitment to improving the lives of children by advocating for children's safety, health, and well-being and working together with child-placing agencies and the State of Michigan to ensure the protection and placement of loving and safe homes is praiseworthy.  Referee Graves' civic stewardship directly aligns with the mission of CSSWC, "to develop partnerships with like-minded organizations, inspiring action that results in rebuilding broken lives, and restoring dignity."  Referee Graves will receive the award at CCSWC's 70th Anniversary.

The Third Circuit Court congratulates Referee Leslie Graves on her accomplishment and her continued commitment to families and children.

Rich Lynch, General Counsel, received the 2016 Ed Pokorny Pioneer of Justice Award.  It is one of the "Laddys."  This is an award from the Metropolitan Justice Center of Southeast Michigan, formerly the Legal Aid and Defender Association.  The award ceremony was held at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit last Thursday, October 13, 2016.  Chief Judge Denise Page Hood and Judge Paul Borman presided over the event.

On Wednesday, October 26, 2016, the Juvenile Division of the Wayne County Circuit Court, conducted training on the Active Efforts Docket and increasing parenting time and services for parents.  The training was attended by 115 people, including jurists, attorneys, and staff from DHHS. The training introduced a new specialized docket, designed to reunite families and return children home to their parents more quickly, wherever it can safely be accomplished.  The training also included providing information about supportive visitation, family reunification, and the parenting partner program.  Lastly, information regarding the language in parenting time orders was also discussed.  The training was very successful.

Zenell Brown and Kent Weichmann were on 105.9 KISS, with Coco, Mason, and Tune Up, to help promote the Child Support event that was held on October 21, 2016.

The Wayne County Friend of the Court is pleased to announce the launch of PayNearMe - a new payment option for parents to pay their child support with cash at any 7-Eleven or Family Dollar store.  That's more than 17,000 trusted payment locations nationwide!

WAYNE COUNTY FRIEND OF THE COURT VETERANS COURT

On March 30, 2016, the Wayne County Friend of the Court, in cooperation with the Wayne County Family Court bench, launched our Veterans Court program.  This program is a voluntary, problem-solving docket that is available to all active-duty military and veterans who have an open case in the Wayne County Friend of the Court.
Veterans Court provides a new approach to addressing the unique challenges that veterans may face after serving our country.  This program offers the development and extended monitoring of an "action plan" geared specifically to a veteran's individual needs.  In particular, child support issues may be reviewed in Veterans Court to determine whether the current child support obligation is realistic in light of the parties' current circumstances.  Veterans Court may also connect a veteran with community and governmental programs designed to enhance a veteran's physical, mental, and financial well-being.
Wayne County Friend of the Court Veterans Court is the first Michigan court specifically created to address veteran's issues as they impact child support, custody, and parenting time.   Enrollment is now open to eligible participants.  Please contact Wayne County Friend of the Court Veterans Court staff at (313) 224-5347 for more details.
FOR OUR CHILDREN

On October 24, 2016, Chief Judge Robert J. Colombo, Jr. presided over the State of Juvenile Court.  The Court Administration provided lunch and a program to highlight the accomplishments of the Division.  It was a celebration of the many accomplishments of the Juvenile Division within the last year.  Judge Colombo highlighted the 100th Anniversary of the Clinic for Child Study.  The Division was acknowledged for their role in making sure that the State of Michigan passed the Title IVE Audit, thus saving the State millions of dollars.  The Clinic for Child Study was also singled out for receiving another three-year CARF accreditation as a quality mental health facility.  The Division was also congratulated for transitioning from the archaic AS400 case management system to the Odyssey System.  This allows the Juvenile Division to be connected with the rest of the court and to better manage their cases.  The Court began two new dockets that will better serve the children and families that come before it; the Juvenile Mental Health Court and the Active Efforts Docket.  Judge Colombo also recognized the extraordinary efforts of our judges.  Among the accomplishments is the Court's Keep Kids In School (KKIS) Program, spearheaded by Judge F. Szymanski, where the court encouraged and highlighted schools to come up with more creative ways to keep kids from being expelled for minor offenses.  Judge Colombo acknowledged the Court's Intake Department for undergoing a review by the Management Assistance Program of SCAO, to review their operations and receive recommendations for improvement.  As a result, the Division's Court Intake Department is now called "The Juvenile Status Department."

It was a fine celebration of food, fun, and camaraderie.  Everyone had a wonderful time.  The employees are still glowing from this wonderful celebration.
ADOPTION DAY

The Family Division-Juvenile Section of the Third Circuit Court of Michigan held its annual Adoption Day celebration at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center on November 7, 2016.

November marks the beginning of National Adoption Awareness Month-a time when courts, agencies, and other stakeholders highlight their ongoing, coordinated efforts to promote the creation of permanent loving families through the adoption process.  Across the United States, there are over 100,000 children in the foster care system that are available for adoption at any given time.  With over 2,000 of those children residing in the State of Michigan, the Third Circuit Court is proud to routinely finalize more adoptions in Wayne County than any other county in the State each year.

While Adoption Day is traditionally held on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the Third Circuit got an early start-celebrating both Adoption Day and National Adoption Awareness Month on November 7th.  The event included special remarks by Court dignitaries and the formal finalization of over ten pending adoptions currently before the Court.
